Clarification: if you add commentary in a reblog, anybody who reblogs the post from you also sees it; there is also a “replies” section, a third method of commentary which allows anybody who opens the post replies to see it, but your followers won’t see it directly. Many types of replies on Tumblr

And then there’s the fourth type of reply, just making your own post responding to the original one with zero context assuming all your followers have seen That Post making the rounds already. This is also common

How does this work?

When you reblog a post, your tags show to everybody who sees your reblog of the post + the person you reblogged the post from. Any of your followers can reblog your post and respond to your tags, giving you a notification saying “so-and-so reblogged this post from you and tagged it with this”

So I can put a comment here like this: this comment is only of interest to me and my ofllowers, not to the original poster or other people who see the post
