@Aleph, dumb question: did the Roman consuls be aggressive about starting wars and battles because of their one year term?
I claimed so in class, and a guy said that there wasn’t any evidence that the term limit had a material impact on that process.

How intriguing

to my rough recollection Rome never really started a war until Caesar start trawling around Gaul.

Since becoming Consul was quite literally the PEAK of a roman political career i don’t imagine the short term influenced their actions on the battlefield as even then they had other officers to help reign them in ideally if they got too out of hand

take my words with a grain of salt smarter people than me have studied rome

sure there were consuls who were bad military commanders but that’s just cause they sucked not cause they felt rushed by their short term

yeah pretty much

It would not surprise me if it rarely happened, and Caesar was a notable exception. He was both in insane amounts of debt to Crassus and had a lot of enemies (who would be chomping at the bit to the sue the ever living shit out of him the moment he left office). War was super profitable for pretty much everyone involved, and it would have been a way for Caesar to get his hands on some quick cash and he paid his troops handsomely (which boosted his own popularity with the troops and their loyalty to Caesar personally over the Republic, but I don’t really know what the specific intent was there).

oh yeah if Caesar ever didn’t have imperium he woulda been dragged to Rome over charges on shit he 100% did

ergo why he decided to cross the Rubicon as to him he felt better in a contest of arms rather than a contest of law he was bound to lose

and even then, Pompey had him. Broke Caesar’s line, but then allowed him to retreat and regroup rather than running his troops down and crushing him for good. Truly an all time blunder. The final blunder of a failing Republic even.

actually ur right. I totally do this all the time (or more than I think) because people wolf me SO often irl. my best friend constantly says the dumbest shit and I always kinda believe it. So ive definitely been caught pretending I thought an outfit was good or something bc she’ll show me an outfit and be like “isnt this pretty” and i have no idea, because I wear pajamas or jeans and a crop top every single day, so im like “i mean i guess” and then get called out
