ok i lied. anya taylor-joy is enjoyable, and this movie would actually probably be pretty good for someone viewing while high, which is enough to bump it up to a 2/10

i really thought it was gonna hit, people really hyped this one up. but it was genuinely the worst parts of Food Movies, worst part of Wealth Disparity Movies, and worst part of Horror Movies mashed into 1 movie.
i think The Substance kinda fell into a lot of the same traps but it at least did some things interestingly.

My favorite part is Aimee Carrero asking not to die, Ralph Fiennes asking her where she went to school and if she had student loans, Carrero responding “Brown” and “no”, and just hitting her with the “I’m sorry. You’re dying.” The delivery just hits.
I feel like the vibe is too similar to anti-intellectualism for me to really like it. A hamburger is not the pinnacle of cuisine. The first Michelin star restaurant I went to was this Middle-eastern restaurant called Albi (I saw AOC and Ilhan Omar at a table there too it was surreal). We all got the prix fixe option and one of us got the wine tasting, and it was a great time. Everything I tasted was new to me and delicious. The sommeliers (there were two that alternated) were fun to listen to. It was a fine dining experience that was far too expensive and fancy to do more than once a blue moon, but I’m glad it exists as an option instead of just smash burgers. Like yeah people can be pretentious, smug assholes about it, but fine dining isn’t the issue in that equation.
