Is there a maximum, though?

If n is even, you always can arrange the groups into

{n,1} {n-1, 2 (aka 1+1)} {n-2, 3 ( aka 1+2)} …{n/2, n/2+1}
making k=n/2 basically, since n can go into infinity, k can too.
