I may be missing some context but person agnostic mechanics, like everyone has a chance to randomly draw the same effects from a pool with the same rates, is it sort of neutralizes a lot of potential PR based gameplay and reduces night action decisions to purely those of social-alignment reads (vs including social-role reads which is related but slightly different). Like it doesnā€™t really matter who wolves kill or who they role block beyond who has the most accurate reads or whatever because itā€™s unknowable what actions the respective players have so all that matters is read accuracy. It also creates very weird variance issues that just flattens the significance of mechanical skill to nothing, and makes it largely about the luck of the draw.

At least those are the high level issues of a game where everyone is like a JOAT that draws cards from the same deck. I think there are ways to improve it on an individual gameplay experience level, but thereā€™s still a huge variance problem to some extent. Like if there are kills and peeks in the pool, the outcome of the game can hinge so much on how often those effects can used. Itā€™s very difficult to preserve the fantasy of a random deck while not reducing the village power design to suite RNG factional abilities handed out randomly. Any skill element also tends to buff wolves because wolves are going to have more information to make better decisions (in shared pool systems generally, cross-factional or not).

Iā€™m rambling and it may not even be relevant, but Iā€™ve thought about similar systems before, and itā€™s a concept that Iā€™ve struggled to find an Interesting implementation of, and most ideas tend to oscillate between boring and/or broken. However, I do think the potential is still there, but itā€™s just a hard design problem. Definitely think the way to look at it is a hand mechanic, and actions are compositions based on either the hand or you pick cards or whatever which then compose into an action. Add on draw/discard mechs, and thereā€™s a potential for interesting decisions (there was a FAM 4 role I explored a lot of this for). Exactly how the total card pool works and is distributed is a big question, and you want some slight differentiation between roles so who you kill on each faction matters. (That path though tends to run into a lot of effect granularity issues, but this post is already long enough.)

gamer misogyny

fol has influenced me. im starting to get bothered by misogyny and racism. i wasnt before. when i say something like that i say it lightly and like im hoping its clear in a lighthearted way, but if someone says it in a mean way it feels gross. and in beyond all reason earlier there was an american and a british person being racist to our chinese teammate and i cringed at what they were saying and reported them. it never dawned to me just how prevalent racism and sexism is in gamer circles
