the (belated) last words of the Praying Mantis:
As the challengers took their places, the Praying Mantis grinned, whirling in dance with the Robin. At least she would still stand a chance to survive the voting phase.
What she failed to notice was the smirk hidden behind the Robin’s mask, a grim foreshadowing of what was yet to come. As the dance ended and the voting began, the Mantis carefully observed the others, one by one, as they placed their votes. All seemed to go according to plan - she would be safe for one more day.
Announcing the results, the voices of the Trinity resounded through the halls - the Robin would be executed. And yet, the Robin chuckled lowly, turning to the Mantis.
“It’s been a pleasure,” he acknowledged, dipping his head in the slightest of bows as the Mantis looked on in confusion.
“Ooh, what’s this?” the Trinity exclaimed, their voices fluttering with excitement. “It seems the Praying Mantis shall speak her final words tonight!”
The challengers turned toward the Mantis, their faceless figures watching with bated breath. A ripple of murmurs rushed through the room as they awaited her parting words.
Stepping to the front of the crowd, the Mantis dipped her head as a sign of respect. “I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed this masquerade our beloved Trinity has hosted.” Her gaze swept across all of the attendees, stopping in particular on the Robin. “And to you, sir,” she addressed him, “I wish you an eventful evening. Well played. Who knows, perhaps we shall meet again… On the other side.”
To nobody in particular, the Mantis sang one last ditty:
"The gardens rife with rose and thorn,
The ballroom filled with song,
The stadium home to heroes unborn -
Pray, tell me, was I wrong
To join this contest of skill and wit,
To don a mask so sly?
For when I’ve lost, I must admit-
'Tis now my time to die!"
Her giggles bubbled into laughter, filling the air with the childish sound. Nobody spoke, and the Mantis lowered her head, still laughing. There was an increasingly disturbing tone to it - perhaps she really had gone mad. And, just as abruptly as her laughter had started, a swift end was put to it by the executioner, and the room fell into an uneasy silence.
