People on here don’t understand image chess and it’s sad

I tried to imagine playing chess and it was like infinitely dull to me. I think I don’t have chess brain at all

I think the thing that makes mahjong so compelling to me is that because of the nature of randomness, suboptimal moves will often have better outcomes than optimal ones even against a perfect opponent.

Say you have a 12- run that needs a 3 to complete, and a -56- run that needs a 4 or 7 to complete, and you gotta discard down one. You generally wanna toss the 12-, because there’s fewer tiles that complete it.

I hit send too early

You want to drop the 12, because fewer tiles complete it than the 56. But maybe immediatelt afterward you draw a 3. It was optimal at the time to toss the 12, but because of RNG, you would’ve been better off in this single instance if you had perfect information going with the 12.

Chess only has this if your opponent fucks up. Against a predictable opponent, the same set of moves are Always optimal. It’s so deterministic. There’s no gamble. I need to be completely insane in my games

pokemon showdown midladder is an awesome place because you’ll have a scizor out against their garchomp (who’s at like 25% or so, enough for you to be able to kill them) so you figure you can get away with using swords dance because garchomp can’t do enough to you for it to matter.

and then the garchomp uses fire blast and ohkos you

And like I’m not denying that you CAN take risks and get rewards and have interesting decisions in chess but the only source of that is the other player. There’s a beauty in mahjong of being against the Uncaring Randomness of the wall. I love the wall. It hates me

I need to curse dice

this is probably not a good example because scizor isn’t really that ou viable anymore but. pokemon just carrying the wildest moves that you would never expect them to carry that completely ruin all of your plans. you’d love it

and also the classic lando vs heatran matchup where heatran clicks stealth rocks (lando outspeeds heatran and can kill them so so easily. but of course the lando player knows this so why would they stay in and click stealth rocks they’re obviously gonna switch out they should switch themselves to predict the switch. so of course the heatran player clicks stealth rocks. gotta get them hazards up)

now made even sillier because heatran can tera to not die to earthquake. so of course lando teras themselves to get flying stab and also destroy heatran’s new tera type

My brother got a phone recently and it’s so funny seeing him leave is phone in all the very silly places I frequently leave my phone. Nobody else in the house is gonna leave their Mobile Device on the Pantry Shelf (set down momentarily to grab chocolate chips from the back)

genuinely pokemon thinking is like that normal distribution meme. low level play no one’s thinking so the lando clicks eq and the heatran clicks stealth rocks. medium level play you go through that wifomy thought process of well obviously the other player’s gonna switch so do i predict that or do i switch myself or whatever. and then high level play they’re ascended enough to realize it’s impossible to actually meaningfully and consistently predict anything and the lando clicks eq and the heatran clicks stealth rocks.

super low level play and no one has a lando or a heatran because it’s ash’s team vs the eeveelutions

these days there’s the kingambit mindgame of sucker punch vs kowtow cleave. people think upper hand will bring an end to this but it will not, it will just give the opponent something more meaningful to do if they predict a sucker punch
