of course as a big nerd I then proceeded to look it up

as did my partner, who was the other big nerd of the class

a few days later, our teacher gave us a scansion quiz (basically, we had to scan the poem, but didn’t need to translate it or anything)

I started robotting away scanning the poetry

a couple minutes in, my partner says “OH MY GOD. HE GAVE US CATULLUS 16???”

I looked down at the paper, actually paying attention to the words of the poem for the first time, see that it it is indeed Catullus 16, and burst out laughing

at which point my Latin teacher was like “well, Arete’spartner, Arete, how would you possibly know this is Catullus 16 unless you looked it up? I told you not to look it up!”
