There is no possible mate in one in classic chess.
there is only 1 mate in two. (fool’s mate) it has a few permutation. white’s f pawn can move 1 or two, (g4 is forced in fool’s mate) and black’s e pawn can move 1 or two.
so there are 2*2= 4 combinations for 2 move mate.
reverse fool’s mate: (white gives mate in the third move.)
there are 16 moves from white which doesn’t block their mate in three. (white can’t move Kf3, f3, or g4.) the rest is the same as in the fool’s mate, which is
15*4 = 60 possible combination.
There is the possible move of e4xe5, but it can happen only in one permutation, so that’s a bonus one possible moves for white.
(I don’t think there are other mates in 3 for white.)
and from here it is just to much combinatoric for me, and I went simple. (I didn’t even consider the order of the moves. So in my math 1. f4 e5 2. g4 Qh5+ is the same as 1 g4 e5 2. f4 Qh5+. It has the same end position, but there are different set of moves in reality.)
the answer:
there is a lot of set of moves to accomplish mate in 4 moves.
