I think the dance of meanings people do with the term poisons it as a meaningful category at all, especially given it’s, like, a neologism. It’s a new word. It shifted in meaning very rapidly. And I think even people who don’t think they’re contributing to the phenomenon/don’t intend to do so will end up reinforcing shitty stereotypes even in innocuous use of the word.
But it’s also something that’s different with different perspectives, I can see how somebody would Not Care. It’s not a huge problem. I just do care, especially because I am the type of woman that people will call a pick-me! So every time somebody says it I have to squint at them and go “do you think less of me for being gender non-conforming? Do you think I’m a misogynist for this?”
And I also think that even only examining the “objectively bad” definition of the word, spending a lot of time hating, say, women have an “I’m not like other girls”, or, to use the modern term, “pick-me”, phase is weird and dumb, they’re not the primary perpetrators of misogyny. They’re mostly teenagers who are looking at societal standards put on them and correctly identifying such standards are fucking stupid, and just end up blaming the wrong agent (other teenage girls) for it
