People cannot stop using their imagination. The imagination center of the brain lights up when you remember things. The theory is that memory is key details and strong emotions, and when we recall entire events, our brain is inventing everything that fills in the gaps and makes it feel cohesive. That and I think storytelling is one of the most fundamental human endeavors, and that we all deeply crave both the telling of and consumption of stories. Like I think conspiracy theories are compelling to people because it’s essentially pretending the world around you is a story and interesting in the particular way that stories are when reality is simultaneously far, far, far more complicated and overwhelmingly banal.
I think most people are “crazy” because their brain isn’t wired in a way that allows them to function the way we generally want them to in society to succeed and get along. They can be born that way or sometimes made, but it’s certainly not just because they continued to use their imagination.
