whats this

oh oh i know this i know this

so, Herakles, as a name! the two components are “Hera”, who, yes, that Hera, the one who spends the entire story trying to ruin Heracles’s life, and “Kleos”, a word that roughly translates to glory. so Herakles is often translated as “Glory from Hera”, or, alternatively, “Glory to Hera”.

but the thing is that Latin and Ancient Greek are like. very different languages. indeed, quite a lot of letters in the alphabet we’re using right now were created speciifcally to allow sounds that didn’t exist in Latin but did in Greek to be written within the latin alphabet

as a result of this, you get lots of instances of Greek names being Latinised, which is the cause of Hercules being the Roman name for Herakles.

other examples include Odysseus being, as a name, difficult to render in sounds native to Latin at the time, so instead the name was rendered as Ulysses or Ulixes, depending on the author.

Play again but with Karlach this time she’s the best girl

as an additional reference, if you’ve ever noticed that some languages refer to Y as “Greek E” - French is a notable example - that dates back to the fact that several letters were added to the Latin alphabet to communicate sounds at that point only present within in Greek, and Y was one of them, referring to a sound close to but not quite the letter “E” that the Greeks tended to make - Greek E, Y.

anyway i have a feeling that Disney wasn’t trying to play upon the interesting complexities of Herakles simultaneously being hated by Hera and bearing a name exulting her name. I think they just didn’t want to write a film about a betrayed wife taking extreme levels of revenge against an illegitimate child

what

@jail hi

I think if you want to avoid explaining the concept of adultery to children but also don’t want to be incredibly stupid about it you can just, like, have him be the adopted child (parentage unspecified) of random normal people, but For Some Reason Zeus keeps paying him really close attention, and Hera is mad that she’s neglecting their children together in favor of this random mortal

the subtext will completely go over the head of kids who don’t know, but an adult who does know will be like “ah. I see what you did there”
