I don’t think the main character ever innately pretended to be Japanese, but he did lead a Japanese revolution as their leader as treason against the monarchy whilst everyone assumed he was, so. This isn’t a spoiler, it’s quite absolutely the premise.
Phrasing the joke this way turns it into British-slander and Japanese-culture appropriation, both of which are lightly amusing to certain individuals in a satirical lens.
