i wanna write a story about Utuu - a guy who is very funny, liked, and brave. although he faces many obstacles, he overcomes them all despite his young age. he is courageous, kind and understanding. he likes roleplaying as anime girls. he never gives up and always wins

There may or may not be a distinction. It depends. At some point this topic is going to come up when I can sit down and actually go through all the things youā€™re referencing, and really look at them, but I keep meaning to put my phone down because itā€™s late anyway. Iā€™ve looked at some of the images, but not the ones that go deep into the process which seem like the more important ones for this discussion.

Anyway I have also done digital art. I still do it occasionally from time to time. I also have sketchpads in the house, and have drawn ever since I was child because I saw my dad making paintings and thought it was cool. I have gone to art shows since I was a literal child and would walk around from stand to stand to see all different kinds of art people would put together and the people who would make them. I also understand the tedium of adding a detail and regretting it as you have to replicate it over and over again and wishing you had just done something simpler. I have literal books about illustration and I even took an art class in college once for fun. You certainly may have more experience than me doing digital art, but I feel like I have more experience with this than you think I do.

But yes I do primarily focus on the text-to-image generative AI tools with my criticisms because I think itā€™s the most offensive. Using a tool to remove a flamingo and filling in the background may have its own ethical issues regarding the training, but doing that in and of itself is pretty benign to me. Like I said, I have no problem with the artists who worked on Spiderverse using AI trained on their own work to reduce the tedious parts of the process. Not all use of AI is bad, thatā€™s why I focus on the worst use of it. I still am probably not going to like art that started with an image generated by AI because, as I said before, itā€™s fruit of the poisonous tree, tainted from its inception.

I cannot tonight, but I will look through the stuff youā€™re linking at some point and try to do so with an open mind. Itā€™s not going to be tonight, but I will try to find the time and energy to give it due consideration.

And thus tutuu begins the cringe roleplaying/fanfic phase: ā€œme but perfectā€

And IDK like this is the stuff I think is cool. This can help people in a lot of really nice ways:

It can help traditional artists speed up their workflow and be less restricted by the raw amount of time you have to toss into the ā€œrendering individual chainlinksā€ machine

It can help disabled people without fine motor control/ability to hold a pencil/ability to draw for long periods of time to still create the kinds of images they want

It just flat-out lowers the skill barrier to entry of art, you have to spend less time learning to create ā€œtechnically impressiveā€ things (This is an objectively good thing that people present as a bad one. Itā€™s good when things are easier. Digital art massively lowered the barrier for entry to art, this was good but controversial at the time.)

Like, AI doesnā€™t just replace artists where they already exist. Thereā€™s a lot of indie game developers out there who canā€™t draw and canā€™t afford to hire an artist: they can more easily make assets for their games that match their vision. Thereā€™s a lot of people who have a mind for lighting and composition and colour choices who for whatever reason canā€™t do the Skilled Hand Motions for art, and now they can create art.

Making things easier and faster doesnā€™t Degrade Artistic Value, high-effort traditional art isnā€™t gone, but having a mass-produced option is awesome! 3D printing produces lower quality plastic objects but it means anybody can do it without a bunch of upfront time investment and money investment. Still good

noooo! not truee! Utuu has many flaws. for instance, he doesnā€™t immediately succeed at everything, and he takes the time to learn from the experience and overcome the problem!

Oh, and to be clear, I wasnā€™t saying you donā€™t have experience with art, just that it felt like you were treating me like I didnā€™t, when this is, like, the only job Iā€™ve ever been able to have. I wanted to explain where I was coming from there.

A ā€œprompt engineerā€ is again doing fundamentally less work or else this whole endeavor does not make sense. Itā€™s only economically viable if it reduces the cost of labor. If this results in an increase in supply, it will decrease the demand and lower the value. Also if itā€™s cheaper to produce, that lowers the barrier of entry for other people. That isnā€™t necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean the market will be oversaturated and most of it is going to be mediocre at best because 90% of everything we make as a species is mediocre at best. Thereā€™s already too much good art to consume. Having a more mediocre bullshit to wade through is not really a good thing.

And I think thatā€™s basically where we differ. I think making art more readily accessible is Good, Actually, and I donā€™t care if it means thereā€™s more mediocre bullshit on the market, because I think it also means thereā€™s more good shit on the market

u guys say what u want but im opening Krita AI right now to generate my girlfriend Sarah. i will make her very hot. you cant stop me.

i mean im the kinda guy to go to a massive convention, walk through the entirety of artist alley, and only have a single artist catch my eye as something I would actually want to like, own

so I mean thereā€™s already so much of what I would consider to be ā€œnot good shitā€ that diluting the pool in general is definitely annoying

increasing the amount of mediocre bullshit seems ~basically neutral

like if I posted a mediocre drawing I made with my literal physical hands holding a literal physical pencil, as I sometimes do, that seems fine?

I donā€™t think anybody has the right to exclusivity on supply of a thing if a better technology exists to carete more of it, I think itā€™s better for humanity for it to be easier to make things of value. And even the shittiest mediocre AI images have value to the people making them, thatā€™s why theyā€™remaking them. The consequences of this are certainly very damaging in many cases but I donā€™t think they outweigh the benefit of just being able to create more. Mass production is cool rip to your jobs but thatā€™s a society problem not a technology problem

you arenā€™t single-handedly churning out enough of such art to actually affect findability

AI can

big big difference in terms of scale

And I think I view art as a bit more, like, utilitarian (in the colloquial sense) than most people because my experience is in, like, creating very commercialised game assets. Itā€™s not a Divine Soul Communication Thing sometimes people just want to make pictures they like.

idk
I completely agree the market will get saturated and that a lot of it will be shit
but a ton of good too imo
for me the review, filter & other sorts of systems we have to wade through content is good enough

Consider the following:
Self insert oc type story that is at first glance a ā€œme but betterā€ self insert
The story is actually about how ā€œme but betterā€ is very unlikely to actually solve self esteem and depression issues (especially if those things are ā€œI am smarter, stronger, hotter, and have 5 women around me at all timesā€ or other such ā€œI would not hate myself if I just had these traits (these traits will not fix your underlying issues)ā€ things
