This generally aligns with my own realisation, yeah. Akin to Dreamer-selecting the Minion on N1 so the Storytellers just make the best go of it.

The Buried’s ability is written wrong in the OP.
It should be “Until Dawn”, not dusk. This error has not affected the game, regardless of whether or not there is a Buried inplay, it has been ran as it should be as stated in the almanac.

I think they’re kinda obligated to make it actually the most helpful, otherwise protection is kinda pointless
That being said you get into an endless loop where if somebody uses their role, The Buried, to successfully protect somebody from death, surely they were the most helpful player instead
You could make a case for a protection role acting as an encompassing boundary, right. In which case, we could assume Jonah Magnus is impossible; or else somebody would have died, irrespective of whether it’s the victim we expected.
But if the Storytellers don’t run it that way, we could look at it the other way and think Jonah Magnus is guaranteed unless the Demon intentionally sunk a kill. After all, the Buried claim wasn’t very subtle.
