Decimation, while it sounds brutal and is usually used as such, actually is meant “to kill one out of ten soldiers”, hence the prefix “Deci” (which is measurement of u times 10 to the negative first power, most commonly used in the metric system). So, “decimation” is actually not very brutal at all. Except for the historical context in that it was used amongst deserting legions, and whoever got the unlucky rock would be beaten to death by the other 9 soldiers.
