Hi. I’m JaggedJimmyJay, and my first post on Fortress of Lies is a wall.
I am sure “forum” Mafia has a shelf-life, in that essentially everything has a shelf-life. Perhaps it dies when forums themselves die, and that is almost certainly happening already. This format for online communication is not as necessary as it once was, back when there was a real benefit to the “bulletin board” style of dialogue in online spaces. Discord and other services like it have already conquered much of the text-based communicative market, and they were preceded by other real-time social media anyway.
However, it may not necessarily be the end of the game we have played for all of this time. We call it forum Mafia, because we play it on forums. It would be better named something more general though, something that captures the essence of what we do rather than where we do it. Just “long-form Mafia” might work well enough. We play the game in a format that allows for extensive permanent records of game material and, when we feel like it, thick analytic efforts that don’t work well in chat, video, or live formats. And I think the spirit of long-form Mafia should persevere, because let’s be honest – the sustaining power of this game lies in the energy of the nerd.
As long as there are nerds that wish to exercise and display their powers of mind, then there will be a place for long-form Mafia. If that means forums themselves will continue solely for the sake of this game, so be it. Or it might mean that other platforms adapt to accommodate. Because it’s hard for any nerd to be their best selves in a real-time Discord server. Even slow-mode Discord could approach the right pace and structure if nothing else.
