Just because you can’t use a word as an exact substitute in every context doesn’t mean it’s not a synonym. However you can still do that. “Don’t suggest that clear plainly means the same thing as plain”

You’re saying that because you don’t remember hearing a word in a specific context before that the meaning doesn’t exist. Essentially every single dictionary source disagrees and suggests “clear” as a potential meaning for “plain”. That’s very silly

“Plainly” is only used to mean specifically clear and obvious, “plain” can be used in related-but-not-identical contexts of “unadorned”, both still CAN mean clear and obvious
