Iā€™m reading a blog post about DeepSeek and holy shit itā€™s so damning lmao. Its reasoning model uses ~96% less resources than the comparable OpenAI model, and, unless theyā€™re lying about the efficiency or something, it appears to be entirely because they were forced to make the models more efficient due to the GPU export ban. The chip memory limitations lead to what Iā€™ll refer to as just ā€œbetter codeā€ (the details are interesting but somewhat complicated to describe), and them managing to train on specific kinds of synthetic data without model collapse (at least so far). The crazy part is the optimizations arenā€™t even that insane. They made a slightly more efficient caching system that aggressively prunes data that it estimates is less important, and split the model into ā€œexpertsā€ that are specialized for certain inputs and outputs. Like thatā€™s it. Microsoft told OpenAI to try building a more efficient model, and they apparently couldnā€™t do it, but holy shit it honestly seems like they didnā€™t even fucking try. These fuckers spent hundreds of billions, and single-handedly revived fossil fuels industry because they couldnā€™t be fucking bothered to do anything but throw more GPUs at the problem.

Iā€™m afraid the CEOs arenā€™t those that remotelyā€¦ care or are passionated about the essence of their projects but more the money, but this might just be a bad generalization, nevertheless somebody who was more passionate and curious cared about quality.

I tried probing DeepSeek with complex made-up questions to see how deepthink works and Iā€™m fairly entertained. And amused sometimes as it screams in confusion

Or they tried to use it, and destroyed it and donā€™t want to admit it/buy you a new one.
