Arete doesn’t strike me as a poindexter. For a movie, I would imagine them to be involved in the events somehow, perhaps fulfilling the role of the in-universe narrator to explain certain monsters or plans for the audience members who don’t get it. I think Arete would still be a tangible character unlike Eliza, because they aren’t a recluse; but they probably have either very little at stake in the story, or their own side events (in a Lemony Snicket kind of way, but less zany).
Actually, the comparison I want to make is to Scream’s Jamie.
