If you whisper, it depends on the players
Standard would be to pretend you didnt hear it, or note that your character heard something but didn’t hear the contents of said whisper.
Or you can go god mode but nobody likes god mode.

Here’s what I suggest.
There at least needs to be an indication of the possibility of a whisper going on in the chat, although you wouldn’t need to specifically say /whisper [x].
John grabbed Lauren by the sleeve and pulled her back, murmuring something in a quiet tone. (Should also be valid.)
John wandered around the room, and stood next to Lauren. (Should be invalid.)
