The Lynx’s Eye — Teasers

…? Whose POV is this?

(hideki)

I still need to check him out, but that would explain some of the weird stuff I’m seeing.

…hm. Yeah, no. It still doesn’t make sense.

Narcissism is normal.
Respecting people from prestigious families (i.e., Tenshou -and by extension Kiyokane-) is normal.
Advisors and politicians. Sure.

Why is the private investigator considered as respectable? …must be some protagonist privilege, but whatever. I’m more confused at something else.

Assassin being “respectable”… Sure. There’s probably some unseen interaction, but this is within the borders of “yeah, sure. makes sense”.

Pyrotechnician. Not exactly a respected job.
Painter. Art expressed in unknown form.
Dollmaker. Uninterested.
Drummer. Same as painter.
Cinematographer. Modern day jester.
Fortune Teller. Source of trouble.

Now… Why is the actress and the violinist not considered as respectable? Hoshinomiya might not be from an elite family, but according to Hagekawa it would be more surprising to not know who she is. Then there’s Tatsuhashi, who belongs to a wealthy family.

…does Takatsukasa have no taste in any form of art? Prosecutor and Botanist. Managing the law. Researching crops and medicine. Classicist and Orator. Politicians.

…it doesn’t make sense to me. It takes a special kind of narcissism to not see that Shogi is also a form of art. Except, it isn’t the only art.

島津道宏

Island. Port. Common Japanese family surname.
Path. Broad. New journey with clarity and openness. Wide.

This is evil. The “Hiro” in Michihiro means “wide”, but usually Michihiro is written as 道広. The new kanji roughly means the same thing, but it’s… not used the common way. It’s like calling someone “Jack Blacksmith” instead of Jack Smith.

Anyhow. Cinematographer with pirate aesthetics, ey? A modern day jester. We need more of him around. It doesn’t seem like Hagekawa noticed anything of interest from Shimazu, so he’s probably one of the roles who relieves others’ tension. (Which probably gets followed up by Yamane’s speech.)

鷹司秀樹

Hawk. Administrate / Manage / Control. Japanese aristocratic kin group. Branch… of the Fujiwara clan. (This has got to be an intentional joke alright.) Family crest: Peony.

Excellent, outstanding, superior. (Yep. This pretty much explains the narcissism.)

It’s a narcist. Just like 十神白夜, there is nothing to explain. (Love the design by the way.)

If I had to say something… “It’s surprising how I didn’t struggle with auto-correct for his name.”

清鐘木芽

Pure, purify, cleanse.
Bell, gong, chime.
Tree.
Bud, sprout.

…second kanji is unusual, as usual.

Her appearance resembles less of a botanist and more of a Flower Heroine. (Even her pose says so.)

Mmn. Yeah, I got nothing on her. Being the adopted sister / aide of Tenshou Seiji, she actively chose to stay in her sister’s shadow. That just sounds like “a normal talented person”.

…ah. I got it wrong. It applied to multiple characters. I misread and only looked at the number of kanji instead of the number of syllables.

  • #2: Ho-shi-no-mi-ya.
  • #5: I-chi-ya-na-gi.
  • #14: Ta-ka-tsu-ka-sa.

The more syllables a surname has, the more classic it sounds. This makes me understand even less as to why Takatsukasa doesn’t think Hoshinomiya has a respectable talent.

Only child with an adopted sister.
Close enough.

I know 0 kanji but seeing zone do deep analysis of this makes me unreasonably happy

Seiji. Child of Kouichi. Two comes after one. Truth born from light. [REDACTED]. May or may not be a reference to Makoto.

Kaguya. Radiance in the night. The main character of a fairy tale. Might be a stage name?

…I swear, any language derived from Chinese gets cursed the more I learn about them.

I still dunno what this was supposed to be, or whether it was supposed to reference anything to begin with.

Mmn. Funny.
Anyhow, what did his full name mean again? “To pursuit a lengthy life” or something like that? Something about getting old, or obtaining eternity.

I get that this is a joke name (I wouldn’t be surprised if it was false name either), but I still don’t get what this is supposed to reference. The only “funny” thing I see is that “nagi” is essentially repeated.

…n? Repeated? That’s the trait of… an onomatopoeia?
*googles Nagi Nagi*
*finds Nagi Nagi no Mi*

“Calm-Calm Fruit” from One Piece… is that it? Is it a reference to “calm”? I mean, considering her temper, it’s understandable that the juxtaposition between her attitude and her name could be funny to some people, but…

As expected, I still don’t understand it.

Okay, this has to be a joke somehow. I don’t know how, but the closest interpretation I can think of is “a mythical bird flies in circles above the ocean”.

I found nothing, so… this should be a fiction name as well. “Blooming bewitchment heavenly stone.” The first two likely represents what happened and will happen soon. The thing I don’t understand is the surname. Heavenly stone? Is that supposed to represent a material object, or is that supposed to be a comparison? Like, “unmoving like a stone”?

Okay, so this is yet another joke name. It has to be. It wouldn’t make sense otherwise. Let’s see… it is “gorge river” instead of “mountain river”, and as for Kyouka… I just give up on that.

If I had to guess, then it’d be something like: “You’re as beautiful as a flower, but when it comes to your job, you’re as sharp as an owl.”

…is this some joke like “in an era of peace, this boy is smart for hiding his wealth”?

…nah. That can’t be it. It’s probably more like: “We are poor, but we hope you will become successful” -kind of prayer from his parents.

The more I look at this, the more I think she is a literal reference to Kaguya-san: Love is War.

you were right that 水海 was a reference/pun for み使い

Y’know what? Here’s my turn.

幸谷火生
Kasei Koutani
Online username: Mars

Have fun deciphering this character.

かせい is spelled in their given name as “fire life,” but with different kanji 火星 it means “fire star” or “mars,” explaining their username. the fire part and the mars part makes me think of a hot-headed person, but that’s a very stereotypical impression, so who knows.
the kanji in 幸谷 literally mean “happiness” and “valley.”
i feel like a different word, also pronounced かせい might be of interest here—化成, meaning “change” in a context that i dont know because im not familiar with the word . i only say that if the whole name is a pun on something like こうた に 化成, but as far as i can tell a “kouta” is a type of song, so while that’s possible it’s not amazingly compelling nor is it easy to tell without knowing more.
its also possible that 幸谷 is a semantic pun rather than a phonetic one, meaning something like “happiness valley” which could easily refer to something like depression

…ah. I sure am slow, aren’t I?
Here lies the spots of the 16th character.

If we go by the trend of 1 and 2, then this should be the Ultimate Lucky Person, though this tradition was broken by the time V3 showed up.

Student Spotlight #9. How come nobody else noticed the missing number?

(Probably because nobody else is as invested in this project as us. At least, as a reader. The one with the most passion is obviously the author herself; snowe.)

Oh, that’s why there’s a missing student in the thing.
I was wondering why none of the characters were missing in the banner when there was a clear hole.

…I don’t know how to feel about this.

My autofill (i.e., my bias) can come up with worlds where all of this makes sense, but some things don’t quite make sense to me.

Fujiwara… does she have more than one talent? Is fortune telling her hobby?

to be clear, none of them are like remotely close to professional levels of cooking

the bar is pretty low
