Did you guys know that sailors didnt wear eye patches necessarily due to losing an eye, but because they had no lighting in the lower deck of their ship, so by keeping one eye closed while out in the sun, it let it be adjusted to darkness, so when they go down they can use that eye to see better in the dark and do whatever they need to do
Also they ate cookies that were extremely hard and would break their teeth if they ate them raw, so they sogged them in grog. Grog is a mixture of water, rum and lemons
Initially sailors were given daily rewards of rum, but after captains found out that they started saving them and get wasted in one night, they started mixing it with water to prevent that. Initially it had no citrus, which was the cause of scurvy. Later they discovered that lemons fixed things, and thats how grog was invented
Back to the cookies - they ate them soaked in grog, and if they were really lucky they mixed them in chocolate pudding. The cookies often times had bugs in them - larva and eggs. So after breaking them up they tapped them down to push out the bugs before eating. Or they ate in the dark so they dont see them
