fwiw I personally land closer to May’s PoV than not, probably, from a like technical perspective

but at the end of the day I don’t care all that much

and I am certainly annoyed by the fact that a far larger portion of AI art than human art ends up doing nothing but take up space that could have been taken up by cool art so like I sympathize with that

ive been going through a lot of listing ideas in my head but i only have like 10 people that i can actually think of for a certain list and everybody else is just fodder

Yeah I mean it’s kind of annoying searching up for specific art and getting AI sites that generate the thing on command, that’s not particularly good art that’s just typing in what I prompted, that’s not a person doing it. But I like following and sharing AI art made by like, individual thoughtful artists, I’m big on that. And I don’t like dismissing a medium because people use it to make spambots online

Regex is evil because people use it to make spambots

im fine with it if its a human being taking their own art and generating an image off it

if it isnt that exact situation or from a group of consenting individuals it feels like theft to artists, which has a bigger emotional impact then it does ai bros who like prompts

ideas can be taken and transformed, the physical concept doesn’t particularly feel like it can.

i don’t have like the worlds biggest problem with artists using it to try to fix a few things in their art but thats a ground im not qualified to speak on

A good becoming easy to produce means htere’s more garbage but that doesn’t mean the artisan stuff’s gone, just harder to find, and that doesn’t mean it’s a net negative on society, because it still frees up resources and makes things cheaper and therefore more accessible and so on and so forth

Sucks but what can you do. Natural part of the society

many of the Clearly Unethical Under My Values things people do with AI art are variations on “attempting to pass off their AI art as having been made by a human without AI” and I think this is broadly covered under “intentionally causing people to have false beliefs is bad*”

* obviously this is not true in all circumstances. you should lie to the hypothetical axe-murderer at the door. it’s fine to tell your homophobic parents you’re straight. if you’re playing a mafia game where everyone knows that lying is part of the game that’s, like, metaphorical boxing, not metaphorical punching someone in the face for no reason.

I wouldn’t care about this so much either but I do/did digital commission art and people are really scary about AI art there. Like super super opinionated and giving just the stupidest-ass arguments against it, they get super witch-hunty and I’ve seen people harassed and accused of using AI for pieces posted before DALL-E 2 even dropped that were clearly not made with AI. So I’ve sort of become crystalised in opposition

Probably not good practice to do all the time, that crystalising in opposition shit, but I like arguing about it because I like art and I like novel mediums and I think the technology is super cool
