Also a year of no interest. Discover charges interest in line 3 months after. No interest is helpful when you are right on money but need to spend a lot of money at once but never again so you can just do minimum payments

i dont know, we dont really talk anymore. He’s unemployed and spending thousands a month on something.

my mom says he has a new family, which i think is code for hes staying with his guy friend/lover.

their online offering (under the name MyBankingDirect) gives a top-tier interest rate on savings with no excessive requirements or fees that would realistically bother me

and there are also branches all over the country (not everywhere but there are locations near both my home now and back in Michigan)

they’re actually originally from Michigan

if there are locations near you maybe give it a look and see if it would work for you?

you can find better interest rates, but usually you’ll have to deal with one or more of the following downsides

  • rando silicon valley startup that could just vanish or be sold off

  • no brick and mortar locations anywhere, making it hard to visit in-person should an emergency ever force you to

  • high requirements to access the highest interest rate (such as a high minimum amount of cash they need to hold)

  • hidden BS fees that hit your account for relatively normal usage

Flagstar (specifically MBD) has none of those downsides (at least for where I live and how I use my accounts) and so it’s a pretty good option imo
