It’s a numerical puzzle called Kakuro.
I would put 26 in all the boxes
Each square goes from 1-9.

Sudoku is the best comparison you could’ve made, actually. I just don’t know whether the unique Kakuro format scales up in difficulty in a different way to Sudoku or not.
Nonogram puzzles seemed like they should be easier than Sudoku puzzles, but at certain levels it seems like required guesswork; potentially from a lack of practice. Kakuro could be the same thing or not, I’ll have to find it out myself.
