let’s say you have 2 numbers, A and B, and you want to divide A by B
after having divided A into B however many times, you end up with some amount left over (or zero, if it divides perfectly)
that amount is called the remainder
for instance, if you divide 60 by 7, you end up with 8 piles of 7 (making 56 total), and 4 left over, so the remainder is 4
you can then convert that amount into the amount of decimal you’re supposed to have by dividing the remainder by the number you were dividing by – so in this case, dividing 4 by 7 to get 0.57 (ish). alternatively, you can express it as the fraction 4/7
so saying that 60/7 = 8.57, 60/7 = 8 and four-sevenths, or 60/7 = 8 remainder 4 are all different ways of expressing the same thing
whether you want to use decimals or remainders or fractions depends on what you’re doing, like, if I’m trying to split a check with six other people, you would want to use a decimal probably, whereas if I’m trying to divide up a box of candy among my seven hypothetical children, you might want to just use remainders, because you can’t easily split up the four left over pieces of candy among seven people

isn’t the remainder -14 because there’s a negative number
20 * -34 = -680
-680 + 14 = -666
therefore remainder is positive 14
