There are several private avenues to resolving this.

Receive that the mod thread is leaked
Lock the main thread
Delete or otherwise hide the mod thread
Question all players in private whether they had seen the thread or not, and force-replace all players that did.
If the amount of players that need to be replaced is not too large, then continue the game.
