I have seen it extensively used to mean any woman who doesn’t conform to gender standards: not wearing makeup, not shaving, liking video games, etc. This is because unfortunately I spend like 10 minutes a day on Instagram Reels before my phone kicks me out and says I’m not allowed to do that anymore

It’s like. Okay so my exact point here is: there are multiple different definitions of this term “pick-me girl”

  1. Girl who puts down other women for men’s attention
  2. Specifically a girl who tries to be different and not like other girls, often by not conforming to gender standards, for men’s attention
  3. Any girl who is different from other girls and doesn’t conform to gender standards

The two different traits (putting down other women, being gender non-conforming) are conflated because there’s a word that means both of them! And so people can justify hating on women who don’t conform to gender standards (by unilaterally calling them pick-mes regardless of whether they do trait #1) and pretend it’s justified because trait #1 is objectively bad
