A truly baffling statement having played with many players who try to do this very thing.
The point of my anecdote about getting N1d as the cop despite being read as Not the Cop was intended to demonstrate the utility of not openly dunking on wolves if you’re the cop because the village proceeded to lose that game extremely easily. If I had downplayed my reads and focused on getting peeks, the probability the town won would’ve almost certainly gone up because they would’ve gotten more than 1 peek. You literally acknowledge that peeks are extremely powerful, but cannot understand the utility of a cop playing to not die. It’s bizarre.
Also I think you’re missing some context about the Cop 13er format and meta that I’m referring to. There’s a specific Cop 13er format where the Cop gets a random N0 peek. This was used in… I think Champs S2? Anyway, a meta developed where everyone announces their random N0 peek and attempts to play the game accordingly. And because you’re going to hard commit to selling a player as N0, players often wait until they see some posts to announce their N0 which also means they need be careful about not showing doubt on players they may claim a N0 on. After that, they cannot show doubt ever about their “peek” without outing themselves as Not the Cop. Then D2, everyone gives a peek again, and this happens every day until the real cop dies or outs with enough peeks for auto. When the cop does die, their peeks were publicly announced, and town has them. This strategy was so successful that it became the meta strategy for that Cop 13er ever since. This is, mechanically, a much, much more complicated game than Mountainous having played both strategies. So, while you can argue that in theory you do not think it makes the game more complicated, I am drawing the knowledge that it has, in fact, literally happened and made the game more complex.
You can think this is wrong, you can think the meta doesn’t have to be that or shouldn’t be that or whatever, but the fact of the matter is it was played that way for years. Playing the game as VT and giving good cop cover is non-trivial and requires mental energy, and is super distinct from VT in mountainous. I called it potential complexity only because you do not have to play in that way and you can totally ignore it, but it still adds an entirely dimension of play and skill expression that was not there before. If you do not think that having to think more about what you’re posting and who you’re reading as VT or not wanting to get outed as the Cop does not add complexity, we have different definitions of complexity.
