If you’re designing something for your personal satisfaction at the expense of a player’s experience and satisfaction, then you’re going to limit how good your games can be. Evoking emotions, even negative ones, can still make for a meaningful experience, but there has to be a point to it so it makes the players satisfied by the experience. I frequently evaluate game mechanics from the perspective of “does this design creating a satisfying game play experience for the player?” If it’s only for my own amusement or to make myself feel clever, I don’t do it.
