Collaging is actually a fairly apt comparison, and it can produce novel images. Generative AI fundamentally cannot introduce anything new to the equation though. When a human makes a collage, the arrangement is some kind of intentional artistic choice, and there’s an intent to communicate something. AI lacks all of that.
