i mean thats kinda a common thing nowadays right
who can really die when people try to kill them

interesting people

these people are so intelligent. and like they have the capacity to memorize and they have resources. im just curious why not spend all their efforts into doing something more tangible in terms of career advancement, i feel like they could all be rich. but maybe thats a bit reductive of me to think. maybe they’re just doing it for fun

so this is how benguined knows all these random facts about everything. quizbowl is ultimate nerd trivia

but interestingly he didnt know lobsters were food for poor people only. and i knew that. im more knowledgable than benguined

Did you really think that killing me would be enough to make me die?

Competitions are in many ways more tangible than career advancement. Automatic feedback. You win or you lose. There’s an objective skill and it’s measured and there’s significantly less… arbitrary bullshit, in a way. It’s like the difference between winning a mafia game versus deceiving somebody in real life

There’s a start and an end and rules. You go in and you do a specific task and you’re good at it and everybody claps and cheers. And the more time you put in the better you get. In a fairly linear manner.

Career advancement is nothing like that

tangible in terms of career advancement. maybe i didnt word that very well

basically i meant that if those people are capable of focusing so much and memorizing stuff

wouldnt it be more pragmatic to memorize law, or medicine, or programming, and become pretty rich?

that is assuming that wealth is their goal, of course, which doesnt have to be. if its fun - thats great

this video is fairly outdated, just from a skim. for one, quizdb no longer exists, and the question database is now on qbreader. secondly, while protobowl still exists, it’s worse than qbreader in pretty much every meaningful way. qbreader for life

this is not a fault on the video creator, as qbreader did not exist when it was made

I understand you meant something else by tangible. I’m not trying to argue that you meant something else by it, I’m trying to explain the alternative “tangible” motivators that competitions have

“Success” is so fucking abstract and arbitrary and far out. If you’re a med student memorising bullshit then you don’t get paid for it for years and years and years. And there’s a solid chance you fall out somewhere on that track and never see any returns. There are no visible immediate rewards. It’s much easier to feel driven to do something with visible immediate rewards

Don’t you “silviu” me

Like I literally gave my answer to this question!!! It’s easier to motivate yourself to do something with immediate rewards as opposed to something with far-off rewards after years of schoolign!!! It’s easier to motivate yourself to do something with really concrete rules and sets of knowledge you need to know
