Nominating @Arete for a Legacy Award - Best Scum Performance (Individual) - Lord of the Rings FM
This deserves a lot of quotes, and a lot of talking, but since the game was like 13k posts long and is only accessible through an archive, I canāt do this properly.
Instead, Iāll give a relatively brief review of why I think Arete deserves this based on their performance in that game. And by ārelatively briefā I mean āstill pretty long.ā
On day 1, two villagers were pretty much on the mark when it came to their wolfreads; most of the wolfteam was in their PoE. Arete was the only wolfteam member that consistently wasnāt.
Arete was an incredibly active wolfchat member, always thinking about contingency plans, optimizing mechanical actions, andā¦ just hanging out, sometimes. Being a towny-looking presence in the thread, moral support in wolfchat, and also the action optimizer at the same time sounds insane, but Arete juggled all of that.
Arete also came up with several plans for agenda advancement in wolfchat, consistently posting messages about how the wolfteam could win the game under different circumstances and what they could do to achieve that. They also helped with the wolfteamās fakeclaims, andā¦ basically, they had a hand in everything the wolfteam did in that game.
And then, as if that wasnāt enough, you have Areteās day 3 play.
Areteās day 3 play is what I would nominate for best fakeclaim if legacy awards included ābest fakeclaim.ā Picture this situation. At the start of day 3, Arete is bleeding and will die on night 3. They are also a huge suspect in the main thread, and they get pushed from the start of the day. The other wolves are trying to come up with a contingency plan, and different ideas are floated in the wolfchat, from another member fakeclaiming a cop check to just bussing before Arete can die and flip mafia either way. What Arete does is write up several fake messages from dead villagers, check if they are under the character count, and then claim medium. The claim was completely unprompted and came as a surprise even to the wolvesā¦ and it was believed. Arete presented it in such a way that despite them being the threadās top suspect, they changed their minds about their slot. They fabricated paraphrased messages from dead players, players whose ISOs could be backread and who were known by many players in the game, convincingly enough for the village to conclude they were real. And none of this was prompted in wolfchat. The idea wasnāt there at all. They justā¦ did it, and it amazed even the wolves.
But if that were the only thing the fakeclaim accomplished, it wouldnāt be a best fakeclaim contender, nor would it be an amazing play. After all, Arete was still bleeding and would die at night 3ā¦ right?
Well. On the same day, instead of Arete being yeeted as the wolfteam anticipated, the player yeeted was one of the aforementioned slots who had a wickedly correct PoE. The player wasnāt the same, since they got replaced on day 2, but the slot still had two pelts behind it and had tried to shoot Arete on night 2. In fact, they were one of the main Arete doubters.
Areteās fakeclaim and dayplay alongside the rest of the wolves were convincing enough for that player to get misyeeted. That player, who had two pelts and whose previous slot holder had an amazing accurate PoE, was yeeted on day 3 instead of Arete, who started the day as the threadās top suspect and was also bleeding. Their flip was cleaned by the wolf janitor, but the wolves were able to push their flip as a disguised wolf flip on the following day, also largely thanks to Arete gaining the threadās trust.
Wait, Arete didnāt die from the bleed on night 3?
Nope. Arete proved themselves to the town with the claim so much that the town neighborhood, one of its members being Firekitten (a known good villager), decided to invite them. The neighborhoodās leader had the ability to cure Areteās bleeding, and did just that, thus allowing a wolf to survive what shouldāve been a guaranteed death. That neighborhood was the only way Arete couldāve been healed, and Arete was by no means a trusted player at the start of day 3. Yet, within the span of one day, they managed to flip the threadās opinion on them entirely, help the wolves get an important misyeet on a player who shouldāve been clear, and get healed from a bleed that seemed like it wouldāve definitely killed them.
And as mentioned before, they continued to help the wolfteamās agenda on later days, including passing off the cleaned flip as a wolf flip, and feeding the wolfteam information from the neighborhood chat to help optimize their actions further. Later, they determined the best course of action when another wolfteam member was outed by the setupās map mechanic, by bussing them and deciding the best conversion target for them.
I have no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best individual wolf performances in FoLās history. And despite having written so much already, Iām sure Iām missing several amazing things Arete did in that game.
Nominating Ritual Mafia 1 Town for Best Town Performance (Group) - Legacy Award
You may or may not remember that I nominated the Ritual Mafia 4 scumteam for the Best Scumteam award. I think that was entirely deserved, judging by how they dominated the game from start to finish.
This game is the opposite. It was equally one-sidedā¦ but the other way around.
The village killed a wolf and correctly sacrificed a villager every single day. They had a supremely correct POE and correctly cleared each other the whole game. The only wolf who had a chance of going deep, Marl, was dabbed on by a town PR on day 1, forcing the yeet onto him. Day 2, a consensus suspicion, PKR (replaced by Marcus by then), was yeeted and flipped mafia. Day 3, a villager with killpower was correctly sacrificed and killed Margaret, a third wolf; and finally, the day 3 yeet was the fourth wolf, Luxy.
Itās not like the wolves didnāt try to play the game; they just never got the chance to. Between a strong towncore and several players with excellent reads, they had no outs and no avenues. From day 2 onward, it was mostly the village posting, with wolves mostly sapped of willpower and drive. If you backread the game at that point, you will see pages upon pages of villagers posting and wolves not knowing how to respond to the tidal wave.
Iāve seen many games on this site, and while I havenāt seen as many as orange, there are few other games Iād rather nominate as ābest town performance.ā If youāre in doubt, read that game; it only contains three thousand posts. Three thousand posts of the village styling on the wolves.
Marluxion - Good mechanical play in NFoL5, managing to take me out through his PGO and led to town win. Led to a mechanical breakthrough in the last day of Return of the Darkness Upick, which allowed us to be able to clear him and a few other players. Shot katze in FAM. Managed to completely take advantage of his ālikesā role in Ciciona FM, giving wolves a huge boost. Overall just a super solid mech player.
Rookie-of-the-Year:
thepigeonnyc - Definitely not a rookie to the community, but certainly a rookie to mafia. After all of the pressuring we did to get him to play, I think the results ended up being solid. Brought some much needed enthusiasm to games, a lot for a player who was pretty new to playing in the game.
Best Team Player:
Arete - If Iām honest I vaguely remember them getting nommed for this before but I canāt find it soā¦ here this is. Arete manages to work with team members as both alignments to ensure wincon is achieved. They ask great questions as town to figure out peoples alignments and deepen their own perspective, as mafia they do a great job supporting their team, acting as a glue that keeps peoples heads in the game. If this has already been nommed consider this a second or a third or whatever.
Best Town Player:For the best overall town player.
hippo - this one is prob my most spicy nom but I think theres a serious case for him as best villager. Hippo is the type of slot that wolves really want to ML but are simply never able to (I would know ). Usually scumread early, hippo manages to get wolves to latch on to a push on him before managing to townclear himself and putting wolves in a tough position. RWBY is a perfect example of this (as is Sorc17 but thats new site so im legally not allowed to mention it xd). Usually just v +ev to have on your team as town.
Best Scum Player:For the best overall scum player.
firekitten - 2 very solid wolfgames in 2021. Endgamed, powerwolfed, won, in both shortnight 2 and in Orangevitational. Is capable of pulling off tough miselims while remaining outside of the PoE himself. Just an extremely capable and strong wolf who manages to both push the wolf agenda while being tough to eliminate.
Best All-Around Player:For a player who is āgood at everything, besides being cis"
katze - cmon. Its literally champze. Despite champze being a thing, this is a FoL nomination thread and so Iām going to pull on why kat is literally goated as both alignments only from FoL stuff. Good thing theres a ton of that too. To start it off, as mafia: Gay mafia played super well, endgamed, won. FAM played absurdly well, endgamed (in a huge fucking mash), won. As town: RoTD Upick - very solid reads on the game, drew a nightkill, and left softs that were interpereted as a straight up clear on a villager (at a point in the game where it was important that villager be cleared). NFoL5 as prince, managed to live a reasonably long time and also fooled the wolfteam, even after being found unconvertable, into thinking was NE. Also, champze. I rest my case.
every one i ignored i agree with an outstanding nomination as my #1
I nominate smoothbrainpepega for Best Troll: They made the town not want to play the game in SFoL 64, and their accusations against the neutral killer Alice Alard made her look towny enough that she endgamed and won.
