like the reasons it only makes a slight difference is because the game was written that way

would likely be a better game if you played as a real character and not a (very nearly literally) walking puppet

the problem is that Byleth is more entangled within the story than any of the other avatar protagonists, and so if you aren’t actively projecting a character that is not just your own avatar on Byleth (as I did when I played it) quite a few beats make less sense

if u give me a blank character i am usually just going to play it like me

like Robin and Corrin are basically just plot devices. Alear is Nothing. Byleth is constantly implied to be a character but cannot be a character because they have to be a blank slate

only real exception is p3 because being nihilistic for the bit is entertaining

three houses, story-wise, has a few other problems but i think it structurally goes from being good to great if Byleth is not a blank slate for the audience

I think the main antagonist of most of the story could use some work :wowee:

there are narratives where audience surrogates are good; 3H’s specific thing of personal and political intrigue being tightly intertwined Does Not Work As Well when Byleth is just like. A Guy

Its funny because like
3H is the first FE with a non-customizable (for the most part) avatar, WHY is this the silent protag

Though mark is unbelievably funny

“Yes lets have you create a tactician that basically serves no purpose for gameplay so Lyn can look at the screen sometimes”

edelgard as a character makes complete sense to me because i was once like her

obviously in terms of her being an actual medieval monarch she makes no sense. but the political landscape in Three Houses is decidedly modelled more on 19th century politics than medieval politics, despite its’ aesthetics
