I’m on the other side of this: I think it’s entirely reasonable that people try to win with wishes and puzzles and stuff, and I don’t think that not going out of your way to do esoteric bullshit is “ruining the fun”. Because the core fun of mafia is in trying to win, the core fun of any game is challenge and difficulty

If you want people to do interesting/creative stuff with your mech, I think you should put other interesting stuff in the game for it to interact with. In a ~vanilla mafia game, there’s really not much that has power other than alignment checks and kills; almost every other mafia role is either alignment/kill OR something that interacts with other roles

What the hell are you supposed to ask for in a no-mech-but-genie game that’s “fun and interesting” that actually benefits your win condition? That moves you forward? There’s no other mech. If you want somebody to do something really creative and clever with the roles, you have to give them an interesting environment to be creative with

Well that’s my fault so

Say you’re making a shooter and all the maps are flat and open with no cover. Just a blank field. All your players will almost certainly pick the weapon with the longest range and start killing each other from far away. And this will be really fucking boring and annoying.

It is 0% the players’ fault for doing this. If this happens, you designed a bad game.

make a medkit spawn next to you and not them

What you have to do is create a situation where people want to do something fun and interesting, where doing something fun and interesting advances winning. Add cover to the map, add counters to the long-range weapons. Now there’s a variety of viable options! And everybody is still 100% doing their best and trying to win!

You can’t expect people to throw the game because “it’s more fun that way”. That’s not how most people playing a competitive game have fun. You have to design your game to be good

Problem: mafia is not a competitive game

This does not invalidate your points at all

Yes it literally is?

What

I don’t mean ‘ranked competitive game’, I mean ‘a game in which players compete against each other to win’

I feel as though we have different definitions

Oh

Also people who say mafia is a “casual game” and therefore people shouldn’t try to win, or that people who do try to win above most other things, are really annoying and frustrating and I hate them

Well yeah I don’t expect people to outright throw

Just. Outright throwing = / = taking risks
