The Lynx’s Eye — Teasers

the disclaimer is obviously a preface for when the mastermind turns out to be the ultimate yaggababble with one of monowhatever’s dumb stock phrases

Monokuma chooses “ultraluminary”, then spends the entire chapter gassing up Over the Moon as being the greatest film ever made.

Michihiro Shimazu, Ultimate Cinematographer

“You should try to stress out Ranmaru a little less. She’s already getting white hairs! …Welp, tough crowd.”
“Frankly, I’ve always wanted to get kidnapped. What’s the point of being alive if you don’t live a little, y’know?”

Although his talent doesn’t lend itself to the public eye, Michihiro has done both main and backup work on multiple big-name films. He’s the sort of name that appears in the big credit rolls that everybody’s eyes glaze over for. He cultivated his interest in film from a young age, following the footsteps of his now late mother—by now, he has reached the level of fame that she had back in the day. Nobody really ever interviews him, but it’s a nice story to appeal to the public.

We need him to have a breakdown over the lighting in modern films for him to be a true Ultimate Cinematographer.

Hideki Takatsukasa, Ultimate Shogi Player

“I heard you, I simply made the educated decision not to respond because encouraging more of your inane talking would be a poor use of my limited time.”
“What? No, it’s not my fault that the dishwasher was produced by an idiot who doesn’t understand intuitive design. Just…”

Currently a 6-dan professional shogi player, Hideki is one of the youngest to gain that title. Becoming a professional player in his junior high years, he is widely regarded as one of the country’s up and coming prodigies. His impressive run and 2nd place finish in one of the greatest national tournaments this past year has cemented his reputation. On the public stage, he has the cold and composed demeanor and respect for his opponents befitting of a refined young man.

Now that we’re approaching the end, when’s the writing project itself going to drop?

as ive stated before, this project is purely fueled by adhd hyperfixation—as a result, i can make no promises about a drop date
however i can say confidently that it won’t be anytime soon. there’s still extremely far left to go and write and stuff
if i were to finish it the timescale that would be on would probably be like on the scale of years
that doesnt mean that there won’t be any new teasers between now and then though

Konome Kiyokane, Ultimate Botanist

“I look forward to being your classmate. [awkward silence] …Ah, I don’t make small talk very well.”
“You want to ‘hang out’ with me? I don’t know what that entails. But if it makes you happy, I will try my best.”

Konome took the last seat due to her not enrolling in the academy through the normal application process. She was instead scouted by the Tenshou family roughly 11 years ago as an orphan working at an herbal medicine shop, and adopted into their family to give her budding talent the resources it needed to truly thrive. Compared to her adoptive sister Seiji (whose talent necessitates press coverage), she prefers to keep a low public profile. However, what little she does appear maintains the gravity and posture fitting for the family she has become a part of.

konome!!! my favorite character of the lot, based on the Advanced Knowledge I have

辰橋弓彦

Dragon. Bridge. Bow (Archery, Violin). Archaic form of saying “boy”.

Hm… I don’t feel like there is anything to say. The name matches the talent. I feel like I could easily imagine a harsh childhood; a strict upbringing to maintain family prestige or something.

I don’t know whether the gloves and his posture are meant as part of formal manners, or as way to hide secrets, but whatever it is, he isn’t the BBEG. He doesn’t feel like he could murder anyone. The worst he can do is probably whatever “the protagonist of DRV3 Chapter 1” did.

和穎富一

Wagai.
和。Harmony.
穎。[…].

Tomikazu. 富一。
Wealthy. Abundant. Prosperous. Fulfilled.

[…].

Okay, so. Apparently this is a kanji that can only be legally used as a name in fiction. IRL it’s not approved for use by Japanese law. (There were probably many other kanji like this, but this is the first I encountered that caught my attention.)

This kanji brought me a bit more trouble than other kanji because I was having trouble writing theヒ part of the kanji. (It was covered by the alphabetic form of his name.)

But anyway, from what little research I did, it could mean [ears], [something pointed like an ear tip], [heads of grain], or [cleverness].

The summary didn’t give much info, so to me he is as good as the Ultimate Unknown. (Not Hagekawa. Even Hagekawa has more information about herself than Wagai.)

山根治
Mountain. Root / Foundation. Govern / Cure.

Orator. In other words, politician. I know nothing about him, and I don’t plan to know anything about him. Because -unless the writing is weird- he has the type of role that lets him get away with anything. A politician is no different than a liar; they know what they have to say in order for you to do what they want you to do.

Come to think of it, wasn’t there another politician in the past? The one with partially white hair?

*checks past profiles*
[Entry number six. Mitsukai Ranmaru. Classicist.]

Ah. The one with the crazy kanji as part of their name. Their vibe of “getting lost into their own world” and wrapped-in-bandage fashion are interesting. From what I see, their role is less of a politician and more of an advisor.

Compared to that, Yamane’s “optimistic big brother energy” is… Let’s just say I personally don’t like optimists. Politicians and optimism. A perfect match made in heaven. This guy’s vibe reminds me of Julius Caesar from Reincarnation no Kaben. He even wears a toga.

藤原愛歌

Wisteria plain. Noble clan of classical Japan.
Uh… Love Song…

*squints eyes*
Fujiwara Chika is a character from Kaguya-san: Love is War, and she is typically seen as a gremlin of sorts. The type of character that breaks the ice and infects others with positive energy and laughter.

However, that was Chika (千花). This is Aika (愛歌). This character looks less like a gremlin and more like a chuunibyou; like Megumin from KonoSuba, or DRV3’s Artist.

…actually, no. It really is DRV3’s Artist. Except less faithful and more lonely. Less appreciated for her talent, and more perceived as unwealthy.

…? I know the investigations are biased, but after reading a couple more profiles, I realize that Fujiwara really stands out in this group of children hailing from prestigious, wealthy, and elite families.

I wonder who will be her friend. I doubt she would become an outcast; that’s just poor. Both in writing and in character for the other talents. Worst comes to worst, she could be used as a useful pawn.

*checks past profiles*
[Entry number three. Shinonome Chen. Pyrotechnician.]
[Entry number eleven. Wagai Tomikazu. Drummer.]
[Entry number twelve. Yamane Osamu. Orator.]

I really hope it won’t be Hagekawa. I… don’t trust Hagekawa. Whether it be before or after amnesia. The BBEG may be some devil-spawn, someone who was forced to be evil, or whatever. But I just don’t trust Hagekawa based on the way the summaries were written.

Yamane could be a mask-wearing politician, but a blank slate is even worse. Because it could be– I already said this:

…? Whose POV is this?

(hideki)

I still need to check him out, but that would explain some of the weird stuff I’m seeing.

…hm. Yeah, no. It still doesn’t make sense.

Narcissism is normal.
Respecting people from prestigious families (i.e., Tenshou -and by extension Kiyokane-) is normal.
Advisors and politicians. Sure.

Why is the private investigator considered as respectable? …must be some protagonist privilege, but whatever. I’m more confused at something else.

Assassin being “respectable”… Sure. There’s probably some unseen interaction, but this is within the borders of “yeah, sure. makes sense”.

Pyrotechnician. Not exactly a respected job.
Painter. Art expressed in unknown form.
Dollmaker. Uninterested.
Drummer. Same as painter.
Cinematographer. Modern day jester.
Fortune Teller. Source of trouble.

Now… Why is the actress and the violinist not considered as respectable? Hoshinomiya might not be from an elite family, but according to Hagekawa it would be more surprising to not know who she is. Then there’s Tatsuhashi, who belongs to a wealthy family.

…does Takatsukasa have no taste in any form of art? Prosecutor and Botanist. Managing the law. Researching crops and medicine. Classicist and Orator. Politicians.

…it doesn’t make sense to me. It takes a special kind of narcissism to not see that Shogi is also a form of art. Except, it isn’t the only art.

島津道宏

Island. Port. Common Japanese family surname.
Path. Broad. New journey with clarity and openness. Wide.

This is evil. The “Hiro” in Michihiro means “wide”, but usually Michihiro is written as 道広. The new kanji roughly means the same thing, but it’s… not used the common way. It’s like calling someone “Jack Blacksmith” instead of Jack Smith.

Anyhow. Cinematographer with pirate aesthetics, ey? A modern day jester. We need more of him around. It doesn’t seem like Hagekawa noticed anything of interest from Shimazu, so he’s probably one of the roles who relieves others’ tension. (Which probably gets followed up by Yamane’s speech.)

鷹司秀樹

Hawk. Administrate / Manage / Control. Japanese aristocratic kin group. Branch… of the Fujiwara clan. (This has got to be an intentional joke alright.) Family crest: Peony.

Excellent, outstanding, superior. (Yep. This pretty much explains the narcissism.)

It’s a narcist. Just like 十神白夜, there is nothing to explain. (Love the design by the way.)

If I had to say something… “It’s surprising how I didn’t struggle with auto-correct for his name.”

清鐘木芽

Pure, purify, cleanse.
Bell, gong, chime.
Tree.
Bud, sprout.

…second kanji is unusual, as usual.

Her appearance resembles less of a botanist and more of a Flower Heroine. (Even her pose says so.)

Mmn. Yeah, I got nothing on her. Being the adopted sister / aide of Tenshou Seiji, she actively chose to stay in her sister’s shadow. That just sounds like “a normal talented person”.

…ah. I got it wrong. It applied to multiple characters. I misread and only looked at the number of kanji instead of the number of syllables.

  • #2: Ho-shi-no-mi-ya.
  • #5: I-chi-ya-na-gi.
  • #14: Ta-ka-tsu-ka-sa.

The more syllables a surname has, the more classic it sounds. This makes me understand even less as to why Takatsukasa doesn’t think Hoshinomiya has a respectable talent.

Only child with an adopted sister.
Close enough.
