There are a lot of factors here. They spend a lot of time drumming up fear on culture war issues like immigration, and just making up lies about them. The Haitian immigrant stuff in Ohio was made up. Illegal immigrants nationwide have a lower rate of criminality per capita than citizens. And yet, they say Haitians are eating pets and there’s a wave of “immigrant” crime. This kind of shit animates a contingent of white voters, primarily rural, that see things be deprioritized (like Christianity) and see their areas because less and less white. They create a boogie man to explain the actual problems people face by pinning it on the marginalized and otherwise poor. It doesn’t help when Democrats just start conceding the framing on the issue, and be like “yeah, immigration is a problem, but…” instead of trying to counter it by saying they’re demonizing minorities to fear monger. It makes me so fucking mad.
Fucking shifting to the right is a cornerstone of lib strategy for no fucking reason. I’ve never seen evidence that it actually works. When Dems win, particularly nationally, it’s when they get their fucking base excited by policies they actually care about. Obama ran one of the most progressive presidential campaigns in recent US history, and he crushed. Yes, the country was coming off of 8 years of Bush and in a recession, but that’s at least evidence that being progressive does not hurt you electorally. Members of the progressive caucus usually do really well in elections unless the party itself doesn’t support them and primaries them (which happens).
