Welcome to Witch Hunt!

Rules

  • Global Site Rules
  • Do not post in languages other than English, edit/delete posts, like posts while dead/during night, utilize shared/hydra accounts, utilize multiple accounts, use polling/wiki features, attempt to mimic host messages, post fake quotes of other players, or spam/slank excessively.
  • Do not cheat. Announcing intention to cheat, yet not acting upon it, will still confer punishment.
    • Do not gamethrow or sabotage games. You are permitted to play terribly, but doing so with the intention to troll will confer punishment.
    • Do not discuss host decisions or replacements in the game thread, especially to gain an in-game advantage.
    • Do not employ out of game information in order to get an in-game advantage. This rule will be enforced loosely with the exception of alignment indicative information, which should instead be made known to the host and will be handled appropriately.
Try not to enable other players to do this either. You can help by not talking about the game outside the game thread.
    • Do not attempt to weaponize the host.
    • Do not announce intent to replace out, or make posts that could easily be interpreted in that manner.
    • Do not strategically replace out.
    • Do not attempt to abuse loopholes in the rules in order to accomplish any of the above. If you are not sure if something is legal or not, communicate such to the host in your PM.

Setup

Roles

  • At the start of the game, each player is given two assignments: a unique role, and a non-unique type. These two things are separate.
  • Roles provide players with abilities and the like. The Holy Villagers are the most powerful roles; Holy roles can only be given to Villagers. A list of roles may be found below.
    • All of these roles will be in-play, except one, which the Witches may exchange with any of their roles at the start of the game only. This role may not be Holy.
    • Other than Holy roles, any player may have any role.
  • Types provide faction. The two types are Villagers and Witches. Villagers are simply trying to hunt down the Witches, whatever means necessary. Witches know eachother and may vote each night to kill a target.
  • If there is only one Witch alive, they may kill two people instead. Once per game, the Witches may also make an “Illusion” kill; they are announced as attacked, but they always survive.
  • Protections, including extra lives, only protect from one kill, but it stacks. All kill attempts made are public, including failed attacks and multiple attacks.
  • Extra lives effect the execution, and are permanent until used. It’s basically a 1-shot deathproof.
Roles

Holy

Priest - Each night, you may choose a player and learn if they are a Witch.

Acolyte - At the start of the game, you learn who the Priest is.

Information

Gravedigger - At the start of each night, you learn the role and alignment of anyone who died that day phase.

Apprentice - At the start of the game, choose Judge or Gravedigger. You will learn who has that role, and you will take over their role when they die. If no one has the role you chose, you immediately take it over.

Watchman - At the end of the first night, you learn the identity of a non-Holy Villager that is not an information role.

Inquisitor - Each night, you may check if a target is Holy or not.

Peeping Tom - Once per game, during the phase before the role you chose can act, choose a non-Holy role. They learn that the Peeping Tom targetted them at the start of the night and you learn what actions they do and what information they learn tonight. They may target the Peeping Tom instead of what they would normally do. If they are dead or no one has that role, you do their action instead. If no one has that role, the Witches are told that the Peeping Tom targetted them.

Spiritualist - Once per game during any day, you may choose to publicly reveal this role and privately name any dead player. You learn that player’s role and alignment.

Defense

Survivalist - You start the game with an extra life.

Gambler - At the start of the game, pick even or odd. On those nights, you are protected from one kill.

Fanatic - When the Priest picks you, you are told and gain an extra life.

Benevolent Old Dame - Once per game when your death is announced, you may give someone else an extra life.

Nurse - Once per game during any day, you may reveal this card and name a role. If they are still alive, they gain an extra life.

Offense

Judge - If no one is executed at the end of the day, you decide who is executed. You bypass extra lives.

Hunter - The first time a player survives being killed, the next night you may kill another player.

Dirty Old Bastard - Once per game when your death is announced, you may kill someone.

Loose Cannon - During any day, you may reveal this card to sacrifice yourself (ending the day) and personally executing someone.

Assassin - Once per game during the day, you may reveal this card and guess the role of someone. If correct, the target is killed.

Sample cards

Acolyte, Holy Villager

At the start of the game, you learn who the Priest is.

Gravedigger, Villager

At the start of each night, you learn the role and alignment of anyone who died that day phase.

Inquisitor, Witch

Each night, you may check if a target is Holy or not.

Witches will receive the link to their discord immediately after their rolecard is sent

Angels and Demons

  • When you die, you may no longer communicate with living players, vote, or use your role abilities. They also join dead chat. However, dead players continue to serve their side as an Angel or Demon.
  • All dead villagers are Angels. All dead Witches are Demons.
  • Each night, the Angels may vote as a group to protect one target from the Coven kill (but not any other kills). Once per game, they may choose to protect two players.
  • Each night, the Demons may vote as a group to Haunt two targets. If the Priest checks either Haunted player, they will receive the result for the other instead. In addition, if the Angels protect either of the Haunted players, they may never protect that person again. Finally, the Angels may only protect a Haunted player if there are more Angels than Demons.
  • Note that in order to flow smoothly, the Demons must choose who they wish to Haunt 12 hours into the night. The Angels have no such restriction, and know who is Haunted.
  • Dead players are informed. They will receive an information dump at the end of each phase containing all information.

Gameplay

  • Executions are majority only. To hammer no-execution, you must have all players except one vote for it.
  • The win condition for the Villagers is Kill all of the Witches while at least 1 Villager remains alive. The win condition for the Witches is Reach parity with the Village.
  • This game is flipless. There is dead interaction in the game (see Setup).
  • Days are 48 hours long, nights are 24. Roles that reveal themselves for an effect during the day may extend the day by 24 hours, at the host’s discretion. This is to prevent strategies such as “reveal immediately before day end to prevent a reaction.”
  • The Witches will communicate through a private discord server.
  • To reveal your role to use an ability, please state so in your rolecard. The host will make the reveal for you.
  • Roles that must make an immediate decision need to have their decision pre-queued, or it will be forgone. All players may pre-queue actions, but these ones need to. You may also make conditional pre-actions, but they may only be based on information you would have at the time.
  • If a setup is egregiously unbalanced, it will be re-randed. This will occur before roles are randed to individual players.

(Can I help you with cohosting?)

This reminds me of BOTF, as there are no flips.

I really really like it for this reason

I played this setup as a 21er last year. Very fun tbh
