About the Rules & Moderation category (Part 1)

i made a show of pointing it out so tutuu didn’t feel upset about it, and i brought it to here so you could try to understand my rationality, if you’re curious

but i’m obviously not in a very “mentally profound” headspace, and i do apologise if i said anything crass or silly

And I think that even though they have the same effect, which one people think is “normal” is pertinent, because a person who will do something “harmful but normal” is a different kind of person than one who will do something “weird and harmful”.

I think differently of soldiers and vigilante serial killers, even though I don’t think “being in a war” changes the moral weight of killing people. I think differently of somebody who refuses to save a drowning child so they’re not late for work from one who drowns a child so they’re not late for work.

It’s important! It’s an important detail! It’s good to get things right.

i think we just kinda value different things in people

whoops!

I’m not contesting that the action is harmful, I’m saying that my opinions of people are not based on utilitarian principles, even in cases where my morals are. People are always hurting each other because they’re stupid and selfish and think that it’s fine to do harmful things if they’re “normal”. So I consider it important to know why a person does a harmful thing, if it’s because they’re ignorant or because they just don’t care, and I think the detail here changes the calculus between the two.

obviously, i don’t think that little of you

Yeah. I think that’s fine. And I think making the mistake is understandable if you’re somebody who doesn’t care what the sound was. I just found it valuable to make the correction because I am somebody who cares what the sound is, and I want it to be out there.

A correction isn’t an act of aggression, it’s just, like, stating a fact

I do think those people need to get over themselves, because if you become hostile upon being factually corrected about something innocuous, you can get yourself into really, really bad situations. And I say this as someone who HATES being corrected with all their wretched shriveled heart, it makes me mad, but I still would rather it happen. It should happen every single time no matter how embarrassed I feel

Obviously this was not one such crucially important scenario. But hostility to factual correction, like, blows up power plants and shit

humans are weird creatures

it’s like acting like we’re entirely different matters, and one of us is more capable of conciousness

People love calling me evil. Completely unjustifiedly. I should start an advice podcast

for now, i’m going to stick to simpler things, and hopefully i’ll feel well enough tomorrow, although unlikely enough.

I wouldn’t

Unless you mean purtint someone in a bathtub and holding their head down

I think I misunderstood the sentence

Yeah I meant like actively holding their head down vs not jumping in to save them
