I disagree.

would you say that the most fun setups are those that fool the player into thinking they have a lot of personal impact when they actually dont?

Hm
Depends

People like feeling like they matter
But sometimes that’s at odds with the setup’s objectives

The platonic ideal of a setup is that everyone is invested and enjoying themselves

Feeling like you don’t matter clashes with that
Being surrounded by toxic fighting also clashes with that
i have a difficult time putting it into words

but I don’t expect people to be able to extrapolate from this well at all

i think to some extent every role madness setup requires at least a few roles that make the player feel like it matters when it really doesn’t.

if every role in a role madness setup substantially matters you are creating the swingiest setup known to man

Yes that’s the theory more or less

That’s also why you’ll find roles which are ostensibly shitposts in rm setups sometimes

It doesn’t matter if they are impactful necessarily
A doctor is impactful but I don’t know anyone who’s popping off for randing doctor

The Most Fun Setups Are When People Are Enjoying Themselves

i think i could count on one hand the amount of times i’ve seen a doctor actually save someone. maybe the lower end of two hands

the doctor is an example of a role where the fear of its existence (in shaping the mafia’s actions) is more impactful than the role itself

I have a like 60% doctor / jk kill stop rate so rip L bozo

jk is a lot more substantially impactful because there are two right answers

this is true

There’s a reason:

  • people on MU find mountainous fun
  • people on SC2 find weird setups the break the conventional mafia design rules fun

the varying tastes cannot be ignored when examining what ‘fun’ is

this is why I can mafia hosting a facilitation of an experience
setup design, ironically, is very little about creating an intricate setup and more creating an experience for people to interact with

they are engaging in one of the greatest time sinks ever so

People lose themselves in the notion of balance
Balance is overrated as shit and completely irrelevant

The only truth of balance is that the appearance of balance is the more important

Because people don’t believe that a game that is literally a coinflip is balanced
