I originally made it like a year ago and literally just forgot about it. I put all the stuff there for it and just went on with my day. I found it earlier scrolling through a private channel of mine

change and grow as a person

arete what do u do with a history degree

are you asking in theory or are you asking what I personally am doing

Yes

in theory there are a number of different options - within the field you’ve got, like, “history academic,” “history teacher,” “various stuff at museums,” “person who consults with the Department of Defense on the history of extremely specific geographic areas,” “archivist,” etc. Some of those require further graduate training. Some common careers outside the field (but where the skills you develop doing a history are still relevant) include law, policy analysis, etc. - basically anything with a lot of writing/research-writing. Like with ~every degree some people also end up doing things that are totally unrelated; my dad was a history major and worked in IT for 18 years.

in practice what I’m doing is “being annoyed at Chicago Public Schools” - I got a job doing tutoring with them since I wanted to move to Chicago and they sure are in Chicago, but the person who was supposed to handle my onboarding on their end is randomly on leave, which I guess is an insurmountable barrier for them or something? :joy_cat:, and at this point I have concluded that I Really Cannot Count On This Job Starting Within A Reasonable Time Frame, Or Possibly At All

:wowee: (to the last one)

Real

last year I had a ~one-year position working with an organization that helps students from low-income backgrounds navigate the college admissions process

they also operate in Chicago but I decided not to try to come back for a second year because, being operated through Americorps, it pays Really Badly and I did not want to try to live in Chicago on that kind of salary

however ‘really badly’ would still have better than ‘not at all, thanks CPS’ so joycat

one of my friends was trying to encourage me to do an alternative certification program and become a history teacher but that sounds like in the most likely case it would involve. working with Chicago Public Schools. which as we have established is not a particularly reliable employer :wowee:
