I’ve been watching a lot of minecraft youtube, and tried paying attention to patterns they went back to a lot. The stone fence - wood gate - wood gate - wood gate - stone fence pattern was used heavily because of the way the blocks interact (the middle gate is slightly higher giving it an arched look) so I adopted that. Trapdoors tend to be used liberally and buttons occasionally for the sake of adding subtle depth, a lot texture, and color contrast.
