in bulgarian we call them the following:
rook → cannon
knight → horse
bishop → officer

the word is officer verbatim which i suppose could also mean commander. or like, the word officer can mean a lot of things

yeah this word is implying a military position not a police position. but our word is used for the military position, we dont call our policemen officers

More broadly an officer is someone in a position (an office) of authority or command in an organization. A police officer is an officer of the law. A lieutenant might be an officer in the army. An attorney is an officer of the court. A treasurer in a small nonprofit could be considered an officer. It really depends on the context

bishops are officers of religion probably so this makes a ton of sense why they picked that word
