I personally wouldn’t say it’s common per se but once you hit teenage years and “boy” or “girl” feel too young but “man” and “woman” feel too old, it’s kinda just the natural middle ground as far as I can tell

men can also just call themselves “guy[s]” whereas there’s no counterpart to “I’m a guy”(/etc.) that doesn’t have Connotations – “gal” is very casual, “girl” has the age thing
