thanks, i didnt know that. thats funny. the words mean the same thing, at least over here. they have no documents, therefore they have broken the law, therefore they are detained and a lot of them are abused and beaten up. im remembering some stories my dad told me and they were all horrible. in comparison imagining native english speakers leftists huffing and puffing about my word choice when neither me nor them are in a position to do anything for the actual refugees sounds hilarious to me heheh

the words mean the same thing in America too, it’s just that calling them “illegal” is often associated with thinking that they’re Bad and shouldn’t be here, whereas calling them “undocumented” basically always means you think they’re fine

A lot of it’s that words become, like, shorthand for views. Right-wing politician realises their policies poll better if they use the word “illegals”, because it conjures the idea of a dangerous person in voters’ minds. All the right-wing news anchors pick this up. Everybody who watches Fox News all day also picks this up and also says “illegals” and also shares these views. Now if you hear somebody say “illegals” you go oh shit they probably got that from Fox News.

Word is associated with anti-immigration views, politicians and news anchors who are pro-immigration avoid saying it because again it conjures up the idea of a dangerous person and makes people more anti-immigration, so they use different terminology so they poll better. Which words you use end up indicating which views you hold

imo “illegals” is strongly right-coded, “illegal immigrants” is only mildly right-coded

Yeah my point was that people avoid the latter to avoid having any association at all with the former
