How Iâm thinking about Star Wars again (I literally have not stopped since last night and I wish I was joking), but itâs time to be The Last Jedi defender. I recognize the film has issues but itâs the only film made by someone who genuinely cares about the continuity (Lucas does NOT give a shit about it) and want Star Wars could be but always falls short of. I donât think Rian Johnson had the script for the first movie and there was absolutely no master narrative planned before having to write episode 8 and start pre-production. Its narrative is detached from 7 because it literally had to be. It also had to be self-contained and, as a middle movie, was supposed to be limited in what it did. IIRC killing Snoke messed with the production of 9 because they didnât think heâd do that. AND IT WAS A GOOD CHOICE. I donât know if I should fully talk about it without spoilers but what Rian Johnson set up for 9 was so much more compelling than the first aborted draft and JJ Abramsâ stain on the Star Wars film canon. The themes of âanyone can be a heroâ and âdonât deceive yourself into thinking either side is pure good or pure evilâ are both things I desperately want for the franchise because its morality is literally childlike and it keeps going back to same 12 assholes and their families and making them The Important Ones.

god yes, setting it up to make people speculate that Rey was descended from the OT trilogy cast and then making Reyâs parents being total randos was So much more compelling than âactually she was Palpatineâs granddaughter all along :)))â

half the movie was them fucking off halfway across the galaxy to some stupid casino for no reason and to move the plot forward literally not at all
rian johnson can and has done significantly better, ep 8âs biggest flaw isnât anything to do with a writing or directing mistake, itâs that itâs a waste of goddamn time to watch it and youâd be better off doing literally almost anything else
like Iâd rather watch a bad movie, at least that might be more enjoyable

genuinely episode 8 is the singular movie I have watched in the past decade probably that I didnât know was going to be a complete wash ahead of time and walked out of feeling insulted at having my time wasted
like at least for F9 my expectation was that I was going to think it was a waste of time
and frankly Iâd probably still rather watch F9 because at least itâs not taking a franchise with potential and running it into the ground
Turns out one of Jennaâs long time friends is a first cousin of Kelly Marie Tran (Rose). Itâs genuinely hard me to think about her character critically because of how dirty Disney did her with the way they handled the hate thrown her way. I just lose all rationality and feel obligated to become the Rose Defender.
