what turn based combat mechanics do people find interesting?

i’m a big fan of being to walk around and reposition (like in dnd or xcom) but i’m not quite sure what else is super interesting

“elements” or “weaknesses” never really stood out to me but i’m actually quite interested in ruina’s “clash system” too (if you have higher speed or are being attacked by an opponent, you can try to fight back and overpower/evade/block/etc their attack)

Clashes are very fun I like them a lot. Gives you a good starting point for deciding what to do and adds lots of little puzzle pieces

oh also i like funger’s limb system and general inventory management being a bigger theme rather than “what nonsense can i cheese this fight with”

physical combat usually feels mentally better when there isn’t precision involved (like there would be in a shooter), so i tend to like no ranged combat or ranged combat being incredibly strong but limited to compensate

…or you can just make ranged combat melee combat+ but that’s iffy

the characters need to be cute and look like animals, at least some of them

but for real a grid movement system is really good for me, one thing i also like a lot is variety, the more different options and items and classes and whatever really makes a game feel big for me

Are we talking like tactics games or straight RPGs here

both have worthwhile concepts to talk about

I really like the idea of planning out moves ahead of time.
Metaphor and HSR scratch that itch better than Persona 5 because of their more detailed turn systems (Metaphor’s Press Turn system is a better One More system, and HSR’s flexibility with the turn order enables some wild shenanigans), but Persona 5’s combat is still a lot of fun given how many tools you have to play with.

yes but they’re fundamentally different ones tbh

I also really really like builds

Persona gets that because you can build all ur personas, but one of my favorite straight-laced JRPGs for the combat system alone is Bravely Default

the job diversity in that game allows you to do some crazy shit if you get a good build going

i enjoy hearing about a lot of things: if you have things to say about both or either, go for it.
