US Election: Discussion Thread

UK is also significantly less gerrymandered and people actually somewhat know their representatives

like if US house results were just translated to presidents which is effectively the UK system we wouldn’t be in this doommode rn

This.
And even then, I’d argue that Trump would’ve won if COVID hadn’t come along.

you say that but dems are projected to get cooked in the house too

Republicans are going to win a trifecta yes

Maybe this is just who we are, then.
A nation that truly just does not care.

hey i said “not in this doommode” and not “completely fine”

the gerrymandered hell still kills us

I’m gonna go sleep.

I’m not convinced it’s much different when the other guy has actually had power before, so everyone does actually know how much they suck

yeah but that was like. four years ago. surely this time he’ll be better

also the guy currently in power also sucks and the other choice is literally his vp

The incumbent party tends to have less enthusiasm in general.

and again, this is a terrible year for incumbents in general. inflation and all

like I could understand you putting forward that if outside of the time he’s been president he’s convinced voters that he will, actually, be better, but there was nothing that he had put forward to suggest to voters he’d do things better than he did from 2016-2020, it was the opposite - jan 6th etc.

sunak was also a defecto unelected PM which didn’t help

he just has to convince the median voter. and the median voter is fucking dumb. he can say things like “tariffs on china” and “elon musk gets a government position” and they’ll believe it’s better

we taught a chimpanzee the median voter’s politics and he hung himself

sunak was actually a much more stable PM than the last few all things considered

And fwiw I was shocked Biden won, but it was almost certainly because of COVID and voting being essentially as easy as it’s ever been. Trump was doing a lot of bad shit, the economy was tanking, there was a pandemic ripping through the country. Then Biden took power and just changed so little lol. Immediately started after the special senate elections when they didn’t send out a big of a stimmy as promised with bullshit. Trump rolled back all these food safety regs that Biden didn’t reinstate. Kids were still in cages. COVID is still a big problem but we’re just being gaslit into thinking it’s not. Merrick Garland waited so fucking long to go after Trump for the J6 stuff and what a dipshit move that was.

idfc if it’s bush league if your political rivals do a crime toss the book at em

also sunak was elected

there is no election for prime minister with the general electorate. it’s just that the party leader becomes PM by convention.
